Bits & Bytes
Bit
It's the short form of the term Binary Digit. In our everyday counting we count in tens (10s), a.k.a. base-10. But computers are different and count in twos (2s), a.k.a. base-2 or Binary, using only the numbers 0 and 1. Are you with me so far?
Byte
Eight (8) bits equal a byte. A kilobyte is a little more than 1,000 bytes (1,024 to be exact), a megabyte is a little more than 1 million bytes (1,048,576 to be exact), and a gigabyte is a little more than 1 billion bytes (1,073,741,824 to be exact). The "little more" is due to the computer using the Binary system of counting.
See, it does make sense, sort of. Hope this helps take some of the mystery out of computers.
Happy Computing,
