The Name Game
Let's look at some more computer terms.
Hertz vs. Byte
Hertz (Hz) is the speed of the computer, i.e. 900 MHz (Megahertz), 2.4 GHz (Gigahertz), etc.
Byte is a measurement of size, as in hard drives and memory, i.e. 128 MB (Megabytes) of memory, 10 GB (Gigabyte) hard drive, etc.
RAM vs. ROM
Speaking of memory, there are two types.
- RAM (Random Access Memory)
- ROM (Random Only Memory)
RAM is most commonly seen in advertisements, i.e. 256 MB RAM.
Your computer can both Write to and Read from RAM. This type of memory only works when your computer is powered/turned on. So, if you loose power, or accidentally turn off your computer, every thing that was written to the RAM and not saved to the hard drive will turn into cyber dust.
